Non-local effects of large
Turbulent mixing in modern large scale models is parameterized through turbulent exchange coefficients. These coefficients are calculated from the classical logarithmic law valid for high Reynolds number boundary layers, in which the effect of large eddies is neglected. This study demonstrates the significance of these effects. Large eddies are essentially non-local, therefore, not only surface boundary conditions but also the conditions at the PBL top must be included in the expression for exchange coefficients. Conditions at the PBL top appear through an imposed stability parameter , , characterizes the effect of stability of the free atmosphere. Restrictions on the eddy size significantly reduce turbulent mixing compared with the predictions of the classical theories. The study results in development of a new non-local parameterization for the large-scale modelling.
