Smooth particle hydrodynamics: some results

The gridless Lagrangian Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics method is now widely used for multidimensional problems describing the motion of compressible media. The absence of a grid allows the method to naturally simulate (in the Lagrangian frame) arbitrary rotation and shear flows, the separation of simply connected and the junction of multiply connected Lagrangian zones. Several 2D hydrodynamic calculations in Cartesian coordinates are discussed. They illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of the method. Results for hypervelocity impact calculations agree reasonably well with experiment data published earlier.
