Comparison of thermal methods for stabilization of supersonic boundary layer
Based on the linear stability theory, the abilities for stabilization of supersonic boundary layer by two methods of thermal action are compared. Wall cooling and local supply of vibrational energy to the molecular gas are considered. Additionally, local supply of vibrational energy is considered that models the real process of laser radiation absorption in gas, in which part of the energy is directly converted into heat. It is shown that as the portion of direct radiation conversion to heat is increased then the temperature of the middle part of the boundary layer monotonically increases due to the increase of the critical Reynolds number. It means that the real supply of laser radiation into the boundary layer leads to the increase in the critical Reynolds number is greater than in the model case, when all energy is accumulated in the vibrational mode. To compare local heating of the upper part of the boundary layer with wall cooling, the regimes for wall temperatures Tw = 1, 2, 3 without a source are calculated. They are compared with the case of energy supply to the vibrational mode by a source with an amplitude I0 = 2. With real laser radiation supply, the critical Reynolds numbers is increased and approached the values corresponding to the deep cooling zone. If technical issues for implementation of these methods are ignored then the obtained data on the comparison of the critical Reynolds numbers and the transition Reynolds numbers compares favorably.
