Application of remote sensing data for digital elevation modelling in regional spatial data infrastructures
Purpose. This study is aimed at demonstration of the specific challenges and experiences while using Earth remote sensing data for regional spatial data infrastructures (SDIs). Methodology. The study shows methods and technologies for development and processing of digital elevation models (DEM) based on the remote sensing data, which include data sources, methods of DEM development, processing methods, results and products. Originality/value. Digital elevation model is one of the promising directions in dealing with the Earth remote sensing data. Remote methods for receiving of DEM are used instead of the traditional ones. High-tech approaches are used for their development. Various DEM processed with the help of GIS allows getting the results, which can be obtained by the traditional methods. Remote sensing data, including orthoimagery and DEM, derived from aero- and satellite imagery in different regions of electromagnetic spectrum, play an important role as the data source for solution of the scientific and applied problems as well as for implementation of a SDIs development program. Findings. Some examples are given to illustrate their application to regional projects of Russian SDI, and in research output of "virtual GIS-Laboratory" of the Institute of Geography RAS, and Altai State University. Participants of the "virtual GIS-Laboratory" produced series of maps of morphometric indicators over the territory of the Kuril Islands. In the Altai District, geoinformation technology for implementation of digital maps is conveyed to the organizations in Barnaul, which are responsible for the performance of cartographic processing and development of regional SDI.
