A technique for determining of the axial and radial thrusts on a runner is proposed. Axial and radial thrusts in a hydro turbine are caused by unsteady flow of working fluid in the blade channels as well as leaks in labyrinth seals and relieve holes. This technique is superior to the empirical engineering approaches, as it is based on the models of three-dimensional unsteady turbulent flows and allows considering rotor-stator interaction, the precession of the vortex sheet and other features of the three-dimensional unsteady flows. The empirical method for calculation of the radial thrusts in the labyrinth seals caused by shifting the axis of rotation of the runner is improved. It takes into account both the impact of rotation on labyrinth's hydraulic resistance and the geometry of the clearance between the stator and the rotor.
